The University of Chicago Application Essay Prompts for 2024-25

The University of Chicago is celebrated for its distinctive essay questions, which we view as a chance for students to showcase their individuality, interests, and aspirations. These prompts can be approached with seriousness, creativity, or a mix of both.

Each year, we solicit essay topics from newly admitted and current students, receiving hundreds of responses that are often eloquent, intriguing, or delightfully unconventional.

Below, you will find the essay questions for the 2024-25 application cycle, inspired by submissions from UChicago students and alumni:

2024-25 UChicago Supplement

Question 1 (Required)

How does the University of Chicago, as you understand it, align with your aspirations for a specific type of learning, community, and future? Please address your personal goals and how they connect with UChicago's offerings.

Question 2: Extended Essay (Required; Choose one)

Essay Option 1: We know expressions like "green-eyed envy" or "feeling blue," but what about being “caught purple-handed” or “tickled orange”? Choose a color-themed expression and give it a new twist. Explain what this new version represents. — Inspired by Ramsey Bottorff, Class of 2026

Essay Option 2: Bob Dylan sang, "Ah, but I was so much older then / I'm younger than that now." In what ways can we become younger as we age? — Inspired by Joshua Harris, Class of 2016

Essay Option 3: Consider Pluto, demoted from planetary status, or Ophiuchus, the thirteenth Zodiac sign. Every group has its outliers. Discuss a group and its unofficial member, and argue whether or not this member should be excluded. — Inspired by Veronica Chang, Class of 2022

Essay Option 4: From "Daddy-o" to "Gnarly," slang evolves and fades. Name an outdated slang term from any era or language that you would revive, and explain why you find it compelling. — Inspired by Napat Sakdibhornssup, Class of 2028

Essay Option 5: Consider questions like: How many piano tuners are there in Chicago? Or how much chalk do UChicago professors use in a year? These are examples of Fermi estimation problems. Create your own Fermi problem, provide an estimate, and detail your process. — Inspired by Malhar Manek, Class of 2028

Essay Option 6: As always, we offer the classic "choose your own adventure" option. Select one of our past prompts or craft your own. Be original, creative, and thought-provoking. Use this opportunity to showcase your unique qualities and fit with UChicago’s vibrant academic environment.

The unconventional essay prompts are designed to encourage creativity, intellectual curiosity, and individual expression. Embrace the challenge and let your personality shine.
